Googlemania!

Now that I have my first big grownup office job, I officially have eight hours a day to sit at a computer and work diligently—meaning eight hours a day to blow off online while eating granola bars. As usual, my greatest accomplice/enabler in wasting time is my best pal Google, so I decided to pay tribute by bringing you this list of Google-related fun.

Google Fight: Type in two opposing keywords and Google Fight declares a winner based on which turns up more results. Love versus money? Money. Luck versus skill? Luck. Eve versus Ditka? Eve, of course.

Googlewhacking: The Search for The One True Googlewhack: Chronicles the quest to find googlewhacks (word pairs that turn up one and only one result without using quotes). Past successes include unicycles emulsifier and hasidic embargoing.

elgooG: The Google mirror site (get it?) Quenches my long-held yearning (not) to see Google backwards.

Googlism: Ah, an old favorite of mine (egotist that I am). See what Google thinks of you. "Eve is a winding road display." I see.

Google Labs: Keep up with the latest Google ideas, inventions, and things to come, like my personal favorite, Google Compute: "Google Compute is a feature of the Google Toolbar that enables your computer to help solve challenging scientific problems when it would otherwise be idle. When you enable Google Compute, your computer will download a small piece of a large research project and perform calculations on it that will then be included with the calculations performed by thousands of other computers doing the same thing. This process is known as distributed computing." In other words, your lazy computer could be helping the common good while you're in the kitchen putting Pop Tarts in the toaster.

Google Answers: Ask experts a question and they'll answer, cheap and fast. Costs around $2.50. It's my personal policy never to pay for anything on the internet, but it's un to read other people's questions and answers.

Google Store: Lots of fine Google merchandise. Don't you need a Google light-up pen? Of course you do!

Google Toolbar:You don't have the Google Toolbar already?! Do you also not have a microwave? Do you live twenty thousand leagues under the sea? Get it! Get it now!

Cookin' with Google: Stick in a couple of ingredients and get an instant recipe. That's how I found my questionably-yummy directions for asparagus chocolate cake.

Wired article: A really interesting article about Google that Wired did in December.

The Unofficial Google Weblog: Nerdy news about you-know-what and everything related.

Gmail: Okay, I'm sure you know all about the forthcoming Gmail system: 1000 mb of storage, searching capacity (duh), no pop-ups, blah blah blah. But don't forget to add your email to the update list so you can be the first kid on the block to get it when it goes public. Also check out this PC Magazine review of Gmail. Interesting.

Google Language Tools: Get Google in Klingon, in Elmer-Fudd-speak, or in that weird faux accent that the Swedish chef had on the Muppet Show (bork, bork, bork!).

Google Guy Says: Tracks the news from Google Guy, "a Google employee who is very helpful in responding to questions and providing information to webmasters about changes at Google." Good for getting it straight from the horse's mouth. Not literally, of course.

20 Great Google Secrets: Another one from PC Magazine. They're not that great, but you may find the tips on operators useful.

Googles: Not actually related to Google in anyway. A site for kids; seems to chronicle the adventures of ugly goo monsters. I'm including it because it would probably be awesomely hilarious and/or terrifying to visit while under the influence of hallucinogens or too much Earthbound.

Also, here are canoe pictures:

The Watergate Hotel:

Shanti and Andrea:

The Saudi Embassy (of Fahrenheit 9/11 fame):
